Meaningful Chords, Meaningful Soloing

Group guitar class taught by Jude Smith

I'm gonna show you how to put meaning and conviction behind what you are saying. Your first assignment will be this: Stop saying things you don't really mean! Start saying what you really believe in and want to say. The music we make comes from our souls, and if our soul hasn’t learned this very valuable life lesson of conviction and honesty, then our ignorance will show up in our music. You’ll play and say all sorts of things you don’t really mean until you understand this. Got it? Good? Great, let's get going...

Yo! Jude Here! I love music... let's make some!
What you'll do

Honesty

Say what you mean, and mean what you say.

Chord Variations

I'll show you how I take ordinary chords, and make them more interesting. Chords are colors, and they are the primary resource we have as musicians to paint our backdrop for our melody.

Chord Progressions

I'll show you how to combine different chords in more meaningful ways that add excitement and anticipation to the song.

Scales

I'll show you how I think about scales on the guitar, and how I use them in unique ways to avoid sounding like you're just running up and down the scale. The 4 and the Major 7 are so important... we'll get into why!

Soloing

Once we have some unique chords, a great progression, and then an understanding of our scale, I'm gonna show you how to bring it all together and say something meaningful. You'll be surprised at how easy this is!

Who you are
Intermediate Level - knowledge of the basics of guitar is assumed here (tuning, beginner chords, frets, basic pentatonic scale knowledge). This class will help both lower and higher level intermediates alike.
What to bring
Electric Guitar (preferred for soloing sections) Tuner Quarter Inch Cable Amplification (Amp or some sort of Amp Simulation) Acoustic can suffice however!

This class was awesome. Jude is so kind and generous with his advice! I'm relatively early on this part of my musical journey, and Jude was so helpful and inspiring - I suspect this class would be useful for intermediate to quite advanced. Highly recommended!

Jude has a wealth of knowledge to share when it comes to intentionality in music. By showing us his process of breaking down songs, chords, and solos, I learned that a lot of these concepts are not as intimidating as they first seemed. We were challenged to implement the new chord shapes, voicings, and soloing tips that he taught us. I left Jude's class feeling much more confident in knowing how to make meaningful musical decisions. This class was always the highlight of my week and it was a blast getting to learn alongside other musicians seeking growth! Highly recommend!

This was a very informative class and was geared for intermediate players. The class was very fun to hang with Jude and learn from him and see how he interprets music. Sometimes I felt like it was a little tough to fit in a question and the hour went by really fast. It would be nice if we were given a few 15 minute private calls throughout the course with Jude to review and have him critique what we were playing to make sure we were playing things correctly. Maybe setting up office hours and scheduling our slots in advance. Thanks Jude!!

This was a great class. I could only attend one of them live but I went through the videos on my own time and feel like I got a lot out of it. Definitely recommend attending the live classes though, since that is a much better experience. Jude is a great teacher and it's fun to learn from someone who is really excited about the material. Thank you, Jude!
